Tocue Virus – How Did I Get It and What Does It Do?

The primary method via which the .tocue files virus can infect a computer system is likely via a malicious file that is masked to seem as if it is legitimate so that users can be misled into opening it. Crooks use different tactics to spread files, like the Tocue Virus’s infection file:

  • They may send you an e-mail, containing the file, posing as an invoice, receipt or some other seemingly legitimate file.
  • They could upload the virus file on several different sites, where it could be posing as a legitimate software download.

Once the Tocue Virus has penetrated the defences of your system via exploiting Windows vulnerabilities, the virus may begin it’s menaces. The main activities after infection for the Tocue Virus are the following:

  • To create mutexes.
  • To modify the registry entries on the infected computer.
  • To drop it’s files in the Windows system directories.
  • To check if it has previously infected a given computer and avoid infecting it again.
  • Encrypt files.

The ransomware also makes sure that victims see it’s ransom note file on the infected computer:

For the encryption of files, the Tocue virus may use AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) cipher. This algorithm for encrypting files is used by many governments and without the decryption key it generates after encrypting files, it can take years to decrypt files, unless the virus has a flaw. The files that are encrypted have the .tocue file extension and they begin to appear like the following:
