Fenrir is the name of a newly-found ransomware virus. The virus is probably named after Fenrir, the son of Loki in the Norse mythology. This ransomware is coded on Visual Studio 2017. The encryption algorithm which is used is AES. Files are encrypted with the first ten characters of your ID. The ID is created from a Hardware Identification tool that is embedded in the virus. The Fenrir virus displays a ransom note accompanied by an image stating that all of your files are locked. Ultimately, you should not pay the ransom sum that is demanded, which is 150 US dollars in this case. Continue to read down below to see how you could try to potentially restore some of your data.

Fenrir Ransomware – Infection Spread

Fenrir ransomware could spread its infection with multiple different methods. A payload dropper which initiates the malicious script for this ransomware is being spread around the Internet, and researchers have gotten their hands on a malware sample. If that file lands inside your computer system and you execute it in any way – your computer will become infected. That is possible since there are versions of the ransomware pretending to be Adobe Acrobat Reader with a payload dropper file called “Adobe Reader.exe”. You can see the detections of such a file on the VirusTotal service right down here:

Fenrir ransomware could also distribute its payload file on social media and file-sharing services. Freeware which is found on the Web can be presented as useful also be hiding the malicious script for the cryptovirus. Refrain from opening files right after you have downloaded them. You should first scan them with a security tool, while also checking their size and signatures for anything that seems out of the ordinary. You should read the tips for preventing ransomware found in our forum thread.

Fenrir Virus – Technical Information

Fenrir is a ransomware virus that encrypts your files and extorts you to pay a ransom sum to get them back to normal. Interestingly, Fenrir is the name of a wolf in Norse mythology who is one of the sons of Loki. Malware researchers have discovered a malware sample of the virus and noted that it is coded in Visual Studio 2017, like ZeroRansom Ransomware.

Fenrir ransomware might make entries in the Windows Registry to achieve persistence, and could launch or repress processes in a Windows environment. Such entries are typically designed in a way to launch the virus automatically with each start of the Windows operating system.

An example of such an entry is the following:

→HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The ransom note that is placed in your computer after encryption is in a file called ransom.rtf as seen in the below screenshot:

That ransom note reads the following:

(Q) HOW TO RESCOVER MY FILES?
(A) Sending to me the amount of 150$ dollars in bitcoin for my bitcoin ID afterthe payment has been made send the transaction ID and your personal ID to my email and then i will send you the unlocker.
MY BITCOIN ID: 19SVnnScjTewmgzE5v9gVXn4mzxFQMT5Wo
MY EMAIL [email protected]
YOUR PERSONAL ID: IN THE WINDOW TITLE
(Q) WHAT IS IT?
(A) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ransomware
(Q) WHAT IS BITCOIN?
(A) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin
(Q) WHERE TO BUY BITCOIN?
(A) https://localbitcoins.com/

After encryption the ransomware will pop open a window with instructions about paying the ransom, which can be seen right here below in the screenshot:

That instructions window reads the following:

ALL YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN LOCKED
(Q) HOW TO RESCOVER MY FILES?
(A) Sending to me the amount of 150$ dollars in bitcoin for my bitcoin ID after the payment has been made send the transaction ID and your personal ID to my email and then i will send you the unlocker.
MY BITCOIN ID: 19SVnn5cjTewmgzE5v9gVXn4mzxFQMT5Wo
MY EMAIL: [email protected]
YOUR PERSONAL ID: IN THE WINDOW TITLE
(Q) WHAT IS IT?

(Q) WHAT IS BITCOIN?
(A) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin
(Q) WHERE TO BUY BITCOIN?
(A) https://localbitcoins.com/

Alongside that window, a picture with the message “ALL YOUR FILES HAVE BEEN LOCKED” will be displayed as shown below:

The note of the Fenrir ransomware is clear and states that your files are encrypted. A ransom is demanded as payment for potentially unlocking your files and that ransom sum is about 150 US dollars, but also demanded to be paid in BitCoin.

You should NOT under any circumstances pay the ransom sum, whatever sum is demanded. Your files may not get restored, and nobody could give you a guarantee for that. Furthermore, giving money to cybercriminals will likely motivate them to create more ransomware viruses or do other criminal activities.

Fenrir Ransomware – Encryption Process

The Fenrir cryptovirus encrypts files in an interesting way. It uses the first 10 symbols of the hex value from your HardwareID. You can find out what your particular ID is if you open your Windows Registry Editor and navigate to:

→HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing\HardwareID
“ClientHWID”

There you will see the hex values and every encrypted file will have these same first ten characters from that ID. The encryption algorithm which is used is AES.

In the near future, the Fenrir cryptovirus could be set to erase all the Shadow Volume Copies from the Windows operating system with the help of the following command:

→vssadmin.exe delete shadows /all /Quiet

For now, the virus doesn’t execute the command, so it might be possible to restore your data via that specific method. In case your computer device was infected with this ransomware and your files are locked, read on through to find out how you could potentially recover your data files.
