Nesa (.nesa) File Virus (Ransomware) – How Did I Get It and What Does It Do?
If you have Nesa Virus on your computer, then there may be several reasons for that to happen. One is if you have downloaded the infection file of this ransomware by visiting some sort of suspicious software download site or downloading it from a torrent site that has been compromised. Not only this, but also the Nesa Virus ransomware virus could be sent to you via e-mail and if so, then you could have received it as an important document, like an invoice or a receipt, for example.
When an infection with Nesa Virus commences, the malware starts with dropping its virus payload on the computers of victims. The payload consists of one or more virus files that could be dropped in the following Windows directories:
- %AppData%
- %Local%
- %LocalLow%
- %Roaming%
- %Temp%
When the files of Nesa Virus are dropped, the virus may begin to create mutexes and obtain your Mac and IP addresses. It does this with the main goal to check if your computer is real and not a virtual drive and has not been encrypted by some sort of ransomware in the past. If so, the Nesa Virus may shut down and self-delete.
If not, however, the Nesa Virus continues to work and may assume rights as an administrator. Those may be used to create registry entries in the Run and RunOnce Windows sub-keys, responsible for auto-running the virus file when you start Windows:
→ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Then, the Nesa Virus may begin to encrypt files on your computer. The files that are encrypted usually are:
- Documents.
- Images.
- Videos.
- Archives.
- Audio files.
- Other often used files.
The Nesa Virus is careful not to encrypt files of Windows so that victims can still pay ransom. When the files are encrypted, blocks of data from them is replaced with blocks of data from the encryption used by Nesa Virus, the AES cipher. This means that they cannot be opened, unless you have specific decryption software.
After encryption, the crooks drop the _readme.txt ransom note, asking victims to pay for a decrypter. The ransom amount may vary from hundreds to thousands of dollars to unlock your files. The ransom note has the following contents:
