Remove DeathRansom Virus (Ransomware Removal Guide)

New DeathRansom Virus virus remove

The DeathRansom Virus is a ransomware that is currently set against target end users on a global scale. There is no information available about the hacking group behind it. It is believed to be a new iteration of the DeathRansom. This is one of the reasons why we believe that the hackers are experienced.

Once the DeathRansom Virus has started it will execute its built-in sequence of dangerous commands. Depending on local conditions or the specific hacker instructions various actions will take place. The file encryption will begin after them — the encrypting component will use a built-in list of target file type extensions.

DeathRansom Virus – Distribution

The DeathRansom virus is a malicious threat which has already been spotted in several test attack campaigns. The hacking group behind the ongoing attacks is not known at the moment, supposedly targets from around the world are affected. At this point there are several popular distribution techniques which are probably used.

The criminals can create many different types of malware files that will contain the virus code and run it as soon as they are run. This includes all kinds of application installers (popular software which is often downloaded by the end users). The popular alternative is to create documents across all often used formats — ranging from text documents to databases. The mechanism is through the running of macros — when the files are opened a prompt will appear asking the victims to enable the built-in code which will trigger the infection.

The hacking group behind DeathRansom can also utilize different phishing strategies that are meant to confuse the victims into believing that they are accessing a safe and legitimate site or email. The criminals will usually host malware sites which will make the visitors believe that they are visiting a safe company site or download portal. This is done by fabricating the shown contents and also using similar sounding domain names. The other popular approach is to rely on phishing email messages which are sent in bulk (in a SPAM-like manner) and attempt to manipulate the recipients into thinking that they need to execute an attached file or follow a shown hyperlink.

The developers of this DeathRansom virus will likely use other techniques as well. In comparison with earlier strains we assume that the campaigns may become more massive if the initial wave proves successful.

DeathRansom Virus – What Does It Do?

One of the reasons why a DeathRansom virus has been devised is an updated code base which introduces changes in the final encryption engine. One of the collected samples shows that the made improvements can be categorized under several different categories.

The security analysis shows that the collected samples are found within executable files showing that it is very possible that payload carrier attacks are one of the main delivery techniques.

Following the DeathRansom virus execution one of the first steps which will be run is the security bypass function. This will block most security applications from running properly. It works against most of the popular software of this type such as anti-virus programs or firewalls. In this case the virus can be programmed to also disable access to the boot options and recovery settings. Some of the samples have been confirmed to also write data to the Master Boot Record which can render access to the operating system non-working.

After this step has completed running the DeathRansom virus will be able to access user data and modify it. This can cause data loss, the inability to access sensitive content and also problems when using the infected computers.

The analysis also confirms that the main DeathRansom infection engine can execute code with administrative privileges allowing it to perform Trojan-like activities including process manipulation and the deployment of other threats. This can include miners, Trojans, browser hijackers and others.

Only when all modules have finished running depending on the local conditions and hacker instructions will the actual file encryption take place. This is the final and most important process as it will make user data non-accessible.

The mechanism is to use a list of target files which will be processed. Usually this includes multimedia files, important documents and archives. In comparison to previous versions and other popular ransomware it will not rename the extensions. The associated ransomware note will be crafted in a file called read_me.txt and presented to the victims. The contents will blackmail the users into paying the criminals.
