Ogdo Virus (.ogdo Files) Removal

The Ogdo virus corrupts personal data and disrupts system security. Being a victim of this nasty ransomware means that you need to remove malicious files from the system in order to use it securely in the future. As regards, .ogdo files, you can try to restore them with the help of alternative data recovery solutions or wait for the release of a free decryption tool. A ransom payment process is highly inadvisable. It only guarantees that hackers will continue creating vicious software to harass and blackmail people.

Ogdo Ransomware Virus Removal

Ogdo Virus

Ogdo virus is confirmed to be a ransomware infection by security researchers. They have stated that the malicious software is based on the code of the well-known STOP/Djvu ransomware. This cryptovirus has been lurking in the wild for almost two years now. Hackers had released numerous strains throughout that time. All campaigns are known to be spread on a large scale so that as many people as possible could eventually fall victim to the ransomware.

In the unfortunate event that your PC has been infected by Ogdo ransomware virus, you won’t be able to open and use valuable personal files as they will remain encrypted by the threat until a decryption/recovery tool fixes them. Besides this fact, we do not recommend that you pay hackers the ransom they demand. All details presented by the ransom note file dropped by Ogdo virus – _readme.txt, aim to trick you to act as hackers expect you to do. The truth is that even the decryption tool they posses is not necessarily a working one. So there is a real chance that you can waste your money and keep your .ogdo files broken.

.ogdo Virus Files

Another name of this nasty ransomware is .ogdo virus files. Apparently, it is a derivative of the malicious extension the virus appends to files it corrupts.

An attack with the Ogdo virus begins the moment it succeeds to run its payload on the system. This moment could occur after you visit a suspicious website that is set to download and activate the ransomware in the background of your browser; or after you download an email attachment, a freeware, a torrent file, even a legitimate-like software update sometimes. These are the main infection channels known to be used by cybercriminals.

It’s good to inform you that most of the time, malicious software including ransomware, reaches computer operating systems and networks via emails. These emails attempt to appear as if they are sent by legitimate companies like DHL, Amazon, Netflix, and so on. However, you can catch them by looking carefully at all email details. Pay attention to the logo, the name of the email sender, the email address, the grammar, and even the stated claims. Furthermore, if you see an URL address, a button, or a file attachment, do perform a security check before opening these elements on your machine. A few seconds test could protect your PC and data from nasty malware infections like ransomware.

As we noted, Ogdo virus is part of the STOP/Djvu ransomware family. This is a severe virus with a high level of danger as it totally disrupts PC security and leaves the system vulnerable to further malicious operations.

Like previous STOP ranomware variants (Boop virus, Vari virus) the Ogdo first drops a few malicious objects that help it throughout the attack.

The ransomware performs a sophisticated attack during which it affects both essential system components and personal data stored on the drives. One of the side effects of infection with Ogdo ransomware virus is its automatic load on every system start. To prevent this from happening you need to fix corrupted registries (see how to do this in the removal guide below).

The encryption stage is considered to be the main one. It takes place soon after the ransomware contaminates the system. While performing encryption of target files, the Ogdo virus may make your system slow and unresponsive. Such a trait can help you notice that something is going wrong and stop the ransomware before it takes its chance to encode all important files. An action that will stop an infection with the Ogdo virus is to shut down the system and launch it in Safe Mode. By entering this mode you will be able to isolate malicious files and remove them without letting them corrupt your data.

To encode personal files, Ogdo ransomware launches a built-in cipher module. This module is developed to transform target files by using a strong cipher algorithm (AES, RSA). Following encryption, corrupted files remain inaccessible and renamed with the malicious extension .ogdo. Unfortunately, all files that store important personal information including document, music, project, database, image, video, backup, archive, and audio files are among the targets of the Ogdo virus.

In fact, the end goal of this ransomware virus is to blackmail you into paying a ransom fee to hackers. That’s why it drops a ransom note file called _readme.txt and places it on places visible enough such as your Desktop and folders that contain encrypted .ogdo files. The content of this file informs that the decryption process can be realized with a special tool that will cost you $490 – $980 in cryptocurrency. The price is defined by the time passed before you contact hackers. The full content of this file can be seen below:

How to Remove Ogdo Ransomware Virus and Restore Files

The so-called Ogdo ransomware virus is a threat with a highly complex code that disrupts system security in order to encrypt personal files. Hence, the infected system could be used in a secure manner only after you remove all malicious files and objects created by the ransomware. The steps presented in the ransomware removal guide below will help you to complete a full removal process. Beware that the manual ransomware removal is suitable for more experienced computer users. If you don’t feel comfortable with the manual steps navigate to the automatic part of the guide.

Note that the removal of Ogdo virus won’t restore encrypted files. Thorough removal of this ransomware will only prevent it from causing further encryptions and security issues.

At this point, STOP ransomware strains associated with .ogdo extension are not decryptable by the tool created by the security researcher Michael Gillespie. However, as soon as we notice an announcement about an update that supports the decryption of Ogdo STOP ransomware variants, we will update this article with information on how to decrypt files for free. Stay tuned!
