.panther Virus File – How Did It Infect My PC and What Happened?

The .panther virus is new ransomware which has recently been captured in an ongoing Asian campaign. At this moment only a very small number of samples have been captured and for this reason not a lot of information is known about it.

There are several infection strategies which are designed to spread such viruses. The most widely used method is to embed the necessary virus code in file carriers. This can include both macro-infected documents and software installers. The documents can be of all popular file formats that are opened in most productivity software: spreadsheets, text files, databases and presentations. Whenever they are opened by the victims a prompt will be spawned asking the users to enable the built-in scripts, when this is done the infection will run. The other type is the insertion of the virus code in software installers. The hackers typically choose popular applications which are commonly installed by the end users, in some cases this can include also computer games.

All virus related files can be delivered to the target users using phishing strategies that can include the sending of email messages and the hosting of related redirects and web sites. They can be hosted on domain names that sound similar to well-known services and companies.

The virus data can also be uploaded to various file-sharing networks and online communities — they can be web forums, chat rooms and social networks. At any time other distribution strategies can be considered.

When the virus is run it will execute its built-in execution sequence which can change from campaign to campaign. Commonly such threats will run a data hijacking procedure. It can acquire both personal user information that can expose the identity of the users by hijacking information such as their name, address, telephone number and other related data. The same module can be used to potentially hijack data that can create an unique computer ID. This is done by creating a report of the installed hardware parts, operating system variables and etc. This will produce this value which will be unique for every individual computer.

The .panther virus can also execute various system changes — this can include the modification of the boot loader options, operating system values and the Windows Registry. This can lead to the installation of the malware as a persistent threat — this means that the virus will be launched automatically when the computer is powered on. Any changes to the Windows Registry can lead to the creation of new values for the malware or the editing of already existing ones. As a consequence the users may experience serious performance issues, the inability to run certain services or may find that some of their files are missing.

If the .panther virus is configured to install a Trojan horse infection which will make it possible to take over control of the victim systems and also steal any kind of data.

The final encryption phase will run when the other modules have finished executing. Like most other viruses of this category the processing of user data will be done according to a built-in list of target file type extensions. This can impact the following file types: images, videos, multimedia content, backups, archives, documents and etc. When this process has completed a ransomware note or lockscreen will be shown to the victims. In it they will read that a payment is required in order to access their data.

We remind our readers that at any time the behavior may change and other modules can be run.
