Post-ChatGPT, Vishing, Smishing, Phishing Attacks Surge by 1,265%

The rise of generative AI has ushered in a new wave of cyber threats, particularly in the realm of mobile communication. Recent findings from Enea, a leading provider of network security solutions, shed light on the alarming vulnerability of enterprises to voice and messaging fraud.

Researchers discovered that 76% of organizations are lacking sufficient protection against AI-powered vishing and smishing attacks following the launch of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT and AI-Powered Scams

Enterprises are grappling with the repercussions of mobile fraud, with a staggering 61% reporting significant losses attributed to smishing and vishing attacks. Since the emergence of ChatGPT in November 2022, incidents of vishing, smishing, and phishing have surged by an alarming 1,265%.

Despite the mounting risks, a concerning trend emerges: over three-quarters of enterprises fail to invest in SMS spam or voice scam/fraud protection, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. Compounding this issue, only 59% of Communication Service Providers have implemented messaging firewalls, while a mere 51% have deployed signaling firewalls, leaving a significant portion ill-equipped to detect and mitigate emerging threats.

Recognizing the critical role of CSPs in safeguarding enterprise communications, 51% of enterprises expect their telecom operators to shield them from voice and mobile messaging fraud, surpassing the role of cloud providers, managed IT providers, and software vendors. However, the disparity between enterprise expectations and current CSP capabilities underscores the urgent need for alignment to mitigate risk effectively.

Security leaders within the CSP realm exhibit superior capabilities, funding, and prioritization of security initiatives, resulting in a markedly lower incidence of undetected or unmitigated security breaches. These leaders view security not merely as a defensive measure but as an opportunity to generate revenue, emphasizing the transformative potential of proactive security strategies.

John Hughes, SVP and Head of Network Security at Enea, highlights the critical imperative for enhanced network security measures in the face of evolving threats. He emphasizes the need for CSPs to bridge the gap between enterprise expectations and existing capabilities, highlighting the ongoing mission to safeguard networks and users against sophisticated cyber threats.

In a landscape characterized by constant evolution and relentless threat actors, the preservation of mobile network security remains a paramount challenge for CSPs. Overcoming obstacles such as staffing shortages, budget constraints, and internal organizational complexities is essential to fortifying network defenses and protecting millions of subscribers and enterprises from the costly repercussions of cyber breaches.
