QQMT Virus Ransomware [.qqmt Files] 🔐 Remove & Decrypt Files [Free]

What Is Qqmt Virus?

qqmt virusQqmt is a ransomware threat, and a version of the popular, globally spread ransomware family called STOP/DJVU. Once the ransomware sneaks into a vulnerable Windows system, it encrypts its files and appends the .qqmt to their filenames. Discovering that your files are locked with the .qqmt extension is a clear sign of a ransomware infection you should deal with immediately.

Ransomware operators use the _readme.txt ransom note to demand a huge amount of money in the form of Bitcoin. We advise against following the hackers’ instructions for the alleged file decryption, as there is no guarantee you will have your files restored. By paying the ransom, you will only fuel future ransomware attacks.

To learn more about this ransomware and how to remove it, you can read this article. You can also try to restore your files with the help of the alternative recovery methods we have listed at the end.

N.B. One of the most common questions in ransomware infections is how to decrypt the encrypted files, as is the case with the Qqmt virus STOP/DJVU variant.

Unfortunately, if your files have been encrypted by Qqmt ransomware, it most probably means that the battle is lost. The chances to get your files restored on your own or with the help of a company/a professional that advertises decryption capabilities are nearly non-existent. What most such companies and professionals do is buy a decryption tool from the ransomware operators, and add a markup to the ransom amount upon charging you for their decryption services. In other words, trusting anyone, other than an officially released decrypter, with the decryption of your files is utterly pointless. We will update this article once we have more information on possible decryption, even though the chances are quite slim. What you should do for now is remove the ransomware from your system, so that it doesn’t reinfect you and it doesn’t spread further. Continue reading to get to the final part of the article where we provide technical removal instructions.

Qqmt Virus – How Did I Get Infected?

Qqmt virus is one of the latest versions of STOP ransomware.

All STOP variants may find their way to computer systems via common methods of distribution. The payload file may appear as an email attachment that pretends to be a legitimate document. It may be stated to be a:

  • Work-related file.
  • Receipt.
  • Invoice.
  • E-Ticket for a event or a flight.
  • Financial statement.

If the Qqmt virus uses documents infected with malicious macro scripts, it will run on the system the moment it is opened on the device. Then, the following process may occur:

ransomware-infection-run-by-malicious-macro

There is one more strategy that may be used by hackers standing behind this computer virus infection. They could mask malicious payload files by hiding them in freeware software. Then they could upload infected packages to various third-party sites and describe them by using the following hoax statements:

  • It’s a self extracting archive or regular archive.
  • Download installation files for free.
  • Obtain important software patch.
  • Get a cracked portable version of legitimate app.
  • Install software/game crack.
  • Find key generator (or Keygen).

Qqmt Virus – What Does It Do?

When the Qqmt virus loads on a computer system, it may try to establish connection to a remote host and then download additional harmful payload files. Some of those files should be found and deleted from the following Windows directories:

  • %Windows%
  • %SystemDrive%
  • %System%
  • %system32%
  • %LocalLow%
  • %AppData%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%

This ransomware may also tamper with the Windows Registry Editor to achieve persistence. This common malware persistence mechanism lets hackers abuse legitimate operating system processes by adding entries to the run keys in Windows Registry or the Startup folder. As a result, all files and apps added by the ransomware will be executed when you log in the system. More specifically the following registry sub-keys may be infected:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Finally, Qqmt virus drops its ransom note called _readme.txt on the infected machine and place it in a directory that makes it visible, typically on the Desktop. When you notice it and open it you will see the following ransom message:

What Are .qqmt Files

The .qqmt files are locked as a result of the virus’ usage of the AES encryption algorithm. Hence, you cannot use your important data unless you find a way to decrypt or restore it.

During the encryption, the ransomware scans for the following types of files to encrypt:

  • Audio (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Picture file kinds (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Videos (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Archive file formats (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Documents of different types (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Others.

As you may see all of the commonly used file types used for the storage of important personal data are among the targets of virus. Soon as a file gets encrypted by the virus, it starts to appear with the extension .ccyu after its original name:

Note: Credit for the decryptor goes to Emsisoft researchers who have made the breakthrough with this virus.

Method 2: Use data recovery software

Ransomware infections and Qqmt aim to encrypt your files using an encryption algorithm which may be very difficult to decrypt. This is why we have suggested a data recovery method that may help you go around direct decryption and try to restore your files. Bear in mind that this method may not be 100% effective but may also help you a little or a lot in different situations.

1. Download the recommended Data Recovery software by clicking on the link underneath:

Simply click on the link and on the website menus on the top, choose Data Recovery - Data Recovery Wizard for Windows or Mac (depending on your OS), and then download and run the tool.

Qqmt-FAQ

What is Qqmt Ransomware?

Qqmt is a ransomware infection - the malicious software that enters your computer silently and blocks either access to the computer itself or encrypt your files.

Many ransomware viruses use sophisticated encryption algorithms to make your files inaccessible. The goal of ransomware infections is to demand that you pay a ransom payment to get access to your files back.

What Does Qqmt Ransomware Do?

Ransomware in general is a malicious software that is designed to block access to your computer or files until a ransom is paid.

Ransomware viruses can also damage your system, corrupt data and delete files, resulting in the permanent loss of important files.
