What Is Ccyu Virus?

ccyu virus-files

Ccyu is a ransomware sample that belongs to the globally spread ransomware family called STOP/DJVU. When this virus gets inside a computer system, it initiates a series of malicious changes that enable it to encrypt your personal files stored on your computer.

If you notice the .ccyu file extension appended to the names of your valuable files, you should know that they are no longer accessible. Encrypted .ccyu files can be used again only with the help of a decryption tool.

Ransomware operators use the _readme.txt ransom note to demand a huge amount of money in the form of Bitcoin. We advise against following the hackers’ instructions for the alleged file decryption.

Ccyu Virus – How Did I Get Infected?

Ccyu virus is one of the latest versions of STOP ransomware.

All STOP variants may find their way to computer systems via common methods of distribution. The payload file may appear as an email attachment that pretends to be a legitimate document. It may be stated to be a:

  • Work-related file.
  • Receipt.
  • Invoice.
  • E-Ticket for a event or a flight.
  • Financial statement.

If the Ccyu virus uses documents infected with malicious macro scripts, it will run on the system the moment it is opened on the device. Then, the following process may occur:

ransomware-infection-run-by-malicious-macro

There is one more strategy that may be used by hackers standing behind this computer virus infection. They could mask malicious payload files by hiding them in freeware software. Then they could upload infected packages to various third-party sites and describe them by using the following hoax statements:

  • It’s a self extracting archive or regular archive.
  • Download installation files for free.
  • Obtain important software patch.
  • Get a cracked portable version of legitimate app.
  • Install software/game crack.
  • Find key generator (or Keygen).

Ccyu Virus – What Does It Do?

When the Ccyu virus loads on a computer system, it may try to establish connection to a remote host and then download additional harmful payload files. Some of those files should be found and deleted from the following Windows directories:

  • %Windows%
  • %SystemDrive%
  • %System%
  • %system32%
  • %LocalLow%
  • %AppData%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%

This ransomware may also tamper with the Windows Registry Editor to achieve persistence. This common malware persistence mechanism lets hackers abuse legitimate operating system processes by adding entries to the run keys in Windows Registry or the Startup folder. As a result, all files and apps added by the ransomware will be executed when you log in the system. More specifically the following registry sub-keys may be infected:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Finally, Ccyu virus drops its ransom note called _readme.txt on the infected machine and place it in a directory that makes it visible, typically on the Desktop. When you notice it and open it you will see the following ransom message:

What Are .ccyu Files

The .ccyu files are locked as a result of the virus’ usage of the AES encryption algorithm. Hence, you cannot use your important data unless you find a way to decrypt or restore it.

During the encryption, the ransomware scans for the following types of files to encrypt:

  • Audio (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Picture file kinds (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Videos (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Archive file formats (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Documents of different types (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Others.

As you may see all of the commonly used file types used for the storage of important personal data are among the targets of virus. Soon as a file gets encrypted by the virus, it starts to appear with the extension .ccyu after its original name:
