Qscx Ransomware Virus – How Does It Work?

Qscx is a STOP Ransomware variant. Recently we have seen other variants to come out before it, like .pahd, .pahad, and .mppq, . These viruses all share the same code and the same methods via which they end up on computers.

One of those methods is if they are sent to you via e-mail as e-mail attachments. If so, the files may appear like a must see kinds of files, such as:

  • Fake flight or other kinds of tickets.
  • Invoice documents.
  • Document of grave importance.
  • Receipts for some purchase you don’t remember making.

And the e-mails themselves may seem very convincing as they may contain even fake pictures and e-signatures that make them appear they come from a legitimate company.

Another way you could get your PC infected with the Qscx virus is if you have downloaded the file from some shady third-party website. Usually criminals upload files on low reputation sites or torrent sites and mask them as:

  • Cracks for software or games.
  • Software activation executable data.
  • Key generators, also known as keygens.
  • Patches for different apps.

Whatever the infection scenario may be, once your computer gets the Qscx virus, it may connect to a remote server. From there, it most likely downloads the virus files on your computer. They could be located under different, often random names in the following directories of your system drive:

  • %LocalLow%
  • %AppData%
  • %Roaming%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%

The Qscx virus does not forget to drop the _readme.txt ransom note file in a way so that you can see it as it contains the following instructions left by the hackers:

STOP ransomware virus ransom message

.qscx Files

The .qscx files are encrypted with AES encryption mode, also known as Advanced Encryption Standard. This means that even if you remove the extension, the file still remains with an altered structure and unopenable.

The virus scans for the following types of files on your computer to encrypt them, while avoiding the Windows system folders:

  • Document.
  • Backup.
  • Image file.
  • Video.
  • Database file.
  • Audio file.
  • Archives.

Paying the ransom is not advisable as you cannot trust the cyber-criminals who are behind this threat. Instead, we do recommend that you try out the guide beneath this article as it contains information on how to delete this virus safely and try other ways to get your files back.

      Hi Shobiz,

There is a free decryption tool for older STOP ransomware variants released by Emsisoft. However, it works with offline keys only, while newer versions use online keys. Offline keys for some newer variants have been obtained by Emsisoft and uploaded to their server, so you can try the help of their decryptor. If it doesn’t work for your .qscx files, please back up your files and keep them on an external drive until a free tool appears.
