Nosu Virus Files Removal Guide

Nosu virus is the name given to a severe crypto infection that encrypts valuable files and requests a ransom for their recovery. As reported by security researchers this crypto virus is a strain of STOP ransomware. Once activated on a computer Nosu virus ransomware disrupts its system security and leaves it vulnerable to other malware attacks. In the unfortunate event that you are a victim of Nosu virus, you can find help in this removal guide.

Nosu Virus Files

The activation of Nosu ransomware virus on a computer system triggers an attack that passes through several phases. By triggering a long sequence of malicious operations the Nosu virus:

  • Creates additional malicious files;
  • Harvests certain details;
  • Connects to a remote server;
  • Transfers data;
  • Encrypts personal files;
  • Appends the extension .nosu to their names;
  • Drops the ransom message _readme.txt;
  • And extorts a ransom fee.

Since Nosu virus virus is designed to reach valuable personal files and encode them with the help of strong encryption algorithms such as AES and RSA, it prevents its victims from using encrypted files. At this point, a free decryption solution is not available. However, it may be possible to decrypt .Nosu files with the help of the free STOP ransomware decryption tool the moment security researchers update it to support this STOP variant.

Meanwhile, we advise all victims of Nosu ransomware virus to refrain from following the instructions they see in the ransom message _readme.txt

Continue reading this ransomware removal guide as it will show you how to remove malicious files from your infected system and how to possibly restore .Nosu files.

Nosu Ransomware – How does it infect PCs? What impacts does it cause?

Nosu virus is a data locker ransomware that has been reported to be a strain of one of the most prolific ransomware families called STOP/DJVU. Our team has the information that at the moment of writing this article, Nosu virus virus attack campaigns are active. The infection is aimed at the devices of online users worldwide.

Nosu virus still seems to have no progress as researchers are struggling to find a decryption for its online keys. For those who do not know, Nosu virus is a part of the ransomware virus family, called STOP/DJVU ransomware and it uses two types of keys to encrypt files – online and offline. If the key used on your files is online, it becomes significantly more difficult to decrypt files.

What are the techniques used for the spread of Nosu virus ransomware? They are likely to spam emails with malicious email attachments or links to corrupted websites, hacked web pages, and infected freeware installers. Like some of its recent predecessors Redl virus, Piny virus, and Mkos virus, Nosu virus is mainly spread via malware email spam campaigns. For the realization of malspam campaigns, cyber criminals usually embed malicious code in commonly used file types like documents and archives. Afterward, they attach modified files to emails accompanied by a message and a spoofed email address. So, when a user receives such an email it seems to be sent by a representative of legitimate service, business or institution.

The attack begins when the infection file of Nosu virus virus is executed on your system. As one of the most vicious malware infections Nosu virus performs lots of complex malicious activities that seriously disrupt system security.

All malicious operations aim one – to enable the ransomware to encrypt personal files without being interrupted. For the encryption phase, the virus launches a built-in cipher module with the help of which it scans folders for certain file types that are most likely to store personal data. Every time the module detects a target file, it applies changes that transform the original code of the file and locks it with the extension .Nosu virus.

As the main goal of this ransomware is to blackmail its victims to pay a ransom to hackers, it drops a ransom message with instructions on how to complete the payment process. The ransom message _readme.txt has the following contents:

Dragging the program or its folder to the recycle bin can be a very bad decision. If you do that, bits and pieces of the program are left behind, and that can lead to unstable work of your PC, errors with the file type associations and other unpleasant activities. The proper way to get a program off your computer is to Uninstall it. To do that:

1. Hold the Windows Logo Button and "R" on your keyboard. A Pop-up window will appear.

2. In the field type in "appwiz.cpl" and press ENTER.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

You can access them by opening the Windows registry editor and deleting any values, created by Nosu there. This can happen by following the steps underneath:

1. Open the Run Window again, type "regedit" and click OK.

2. When you open it, you can freely navigate to the Run and RunOnce keys, whose locations are shown above.

3. You can remove the value of the virus by right-clicking on it and removing it.
Tip: To find a virus-created value, you can right-click on it and click "Modify" to see which file it is set to run. If this is the virus file location, remove the value.

IMPORTANT!
Before starting "Step 4", please boot back into Normal mode, in case you are currently in Safe Mode.
This will enable you to install and use SpyHunter 5 successfully.
