Reqg Virus File

What Is Reqg Virus

reqg-virusReqg virus is a ransomware infection. It belongs to a large family of threats that is known as “DJVU/STOP ransomware”. The main objective of these threats is to encrypt your files and then add the .reqg file extension to the “locked” data. Then, the Reqg virus drops a ransom note, called _readme.txt. It aims to extort victims to pay BitCoin if they want their files to work again, or in other words, to buy the decryption key that will reverse the process and fix the files – something that is strongly not advisable to do.

Reqg Virus – What We Know About It

Being similar to other “STOP” variants, like the recently detected .aeur, .guer and .hhqa ones, the Reqg virus may use the same methods of infection. They are two main scenarios:

  • If it is an e-mail attachment.
  • If downloaded as a file from a third-party website.

If this nasty malware infects your computer via e-mail, then it could be sent in a very cunningly created fake message that contains an attachment, which portrays an important document of some sort, for example:

  • Invoices.
  • Work-related files.
  • Tickets.
  • E-receipts.

Reqg virus can also infect your computer if you have downloaded it from the web. The most often cases of infected victims we have seen so far are as a result of downloaded files, like:

  • Cracks (activators).
  • Patches.
  • Hoax setups.
  • Portable apps.
  • Keygens (key generator activators).

When your PC gets infected with the Reqg malware, it may drop its files with random names in the following Windows directories:

  • %Local%
  • %LocalLow%
  • %AppData%
  • %Temp%
  • %SystemDrive%

Among the files Reqg virus drops, not all are virus ones. The malware makes sure that you see its ransom note file, that contains the extortion message, left for you by the crooks:

STOP ransomware virus ransom message

Once it has dropped its files, this malware may set up reigstry value strings in the Windows Registry Editor. They are mainly set in the following sub-keys and could help you locate the virus files manually:

  • RunOnce.
  • Run.

.reqg Files

Reqg virus aims to use AES cipher to encrypt your files. This is an encryption algorithm that changes the structure of the files and generates a unique decryption key after it has encoded them. This key is sent to the server of the criminals who extort you to pay BitCoin for the files.

Reqg virus may encrypt your files using the scanning method. The malware may scan for files, based on their extensions. The mostly affected files are from the following types:

  • Document file types (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Image files (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Video files (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Audio (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Archives (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Other.

Once your files are encrypted, they may assume the following appearance:
