Why Does My Safari Keep Redirecting to Yahoo?

Safari Redirects to Yahoo is the name of a widespread Mac computer issue related to software developed to attack the Safari browser in order to display ads. There are many similar programs for Mac, like QSearch and Bar1 New Tab. These programs may all cause redirects to Yahoo on your Safari browser, which suggests that the threat may be related to more than one unwanted program.

The program that is causing automatic redirects to Yahoo in Safari may end up on your Mac in multiple ways. One of those ways could be if this software is spread by being added to your Mac automatically with the installer of another program, like shown in the example image below. The method is known as software bundling:

This software could pretend to be some kind of useful extra that is included in another installer. This may be presented to you in the form of an install step, which may exist in the “Advanced” install mode. Since many users tend to click on “Express” install, they miss these steps.

What Does the Yahoo Redirect Do?

Safari redirects to Yahoo may have a lot of negative consequences as soon as it is installed on your Mac. This program may be involved in multiple types of activities that are related to changing a lot of different settings to your macOS and your web browsers, too.

Once on your computer, Safari Redirects to Yahoo may pretend to be a helpful browser extension or an app. At the same time, it may run an active process that may be noticed in the Activity Monitor of your Mac. Then, it may change the default search of Safari from Google to Yahoo. This is also known as another type of similar threat – the Google Redirect Virus.

The main purpose of this software is to show you ads. It may display various types of promotions once it is active on your Mac:

  • Pop-up ads.
  • Browser redirects.
  • Ad-supported search results.
  • Highlighted text ads.
  • Banners.
  • Push notifications.

The ads that are shown by this malware may be dangerous in different ways. For one, they may contain trackers, which are objects that are dropped on your Mac and may collect information on your online activities. Such information often includes the following:

  • What sites you visit.
  • Where you click.
  • Your bookmarks.
  • Your browsing history.

No, Safari Redirects to Yahoo is not a virus. However, the nature of the program behind these redirect could trigger severe issues on your Mac.

Is the Safari Yahoo Redirect Dangerous for My Mac?

As we already established, auto redirects to Yahoo can be an indication of a more severe issue that has affected your Mac. Depending on the specific final page that the automatic redirect lands you on, the dangers may differ.

The primary danger that is associated with such redirects is related to the ads it shows or pop-ups it generates. These ads may or pop-ups eventually lead to the following types of hazardous websites:

  • Phishing sites.
  • Scam sites.
  • Redirects to virus links.
  • Fraud Tech Support pages.

I had this awful problem with my Safari browser. It seems that I accidentally downloaded a malware that was very well hidden because none of the manual instructions helped me to stop the annoying redirects to Yahoo Search. The presented SpyHunter for Mac tool helped me though. So, I fixed my Safari and now it is running all good. Thank you

I found an unwanted toolbar after I opened Safari > Preferences > General. The homepage preference is altered. The problem is that I see an option to remove the toolbar but it still appears every time I launch the browser. Is the help of an anti-malware tool the only option to stop this headache?

I inadvertently installed software that caused Yahoo to be my default search engine. I figured out that extensions were pushing additional ebay and amazon links in my browser and causing redirects to Yahoo. I deleted the extensions, restarted the system and the search went back to Google. Thanks for the help

Hello. Please help if you know how I can remove this. I’m on Mac book Pro running Big Sur. A while back I downloaded a fake flash installer and it caused malware on my safari. I removed it, and it came back and it’s even worse.

Hi. I have this virus and what I tried was to check for any Safari extensions which I don’t want or need. There were none. Then completed a Safari browser reset and restarted my Mac. But the virus was still there. Finally, I completed a deep scan and the program found one threat which I resolved and that helped me to get rid of the virus.

Typically, when I do a search, a new tab doesn’t open up, but what happens now is that a new tab opens up and shows yahoo

      Hi Russell,

Did you try to find any suspicious Safari extensions?

Open Safari, go to the menu bar and click Safari. Select Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn OFF all extensions, quit the browser and relaunch it to test. If that helped, start turning the extensions one by one and relaunch Safari every time to test which one is problematic. When you find the unwanted extension click uninstall and relaunch the browser once again.

I can’t find the app I have to remove. I checked the apps in all user profiles and there were 2 items that I removed because they were somehow suspicious. There were “no extensions”. I’ve chosen google as my default but I’m still being redirected to Yahoo. Does anybody have any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hey man, i kinda fixed all of the stuff, thanks for that by the way, but i gotta ask you something about the tips for protection. It seems that you say that I should change my IP address if they got my information, right? How exactly can I do it without paying, because I called my internet provider and they told me that I should pay for something known as “real” ip address. How can I ask them to change it?
