Be alert if you see the above toolbar on your browser. You might have installed adware, browser hijacker or a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). The most often reason you may have it installed is a running a Setup by third party sites. It usually comes bundled with such free software and is included either in the ‘full install’ option or one of the installation steps. Beware when you install such software, because you might compromise your system. In this page, we explain about the toolbar SMSFromBrowser, developed by the infamous Mindspark Interactive Network and what risks it may pose to your computer.
SMSFromBrowser is a browser toolbar and is believed by some to be a browser hijacker. It can be installed either from the toolbar`s website, probably via redirects to it or if the software is merged with other freeware programs the user might download from the web.
After our research team clicked on the red ‘Install’ button on the website, we noticed that there were suspicious permissions requested by the application (see the bullet points in the picture above, marked in yellow). This points out that the toolbar might be oriented into gathering information for different purposes. What supports this theory is their website policies that have a lot of third party software permissions mentioned, some of which ,in their privacy policies claim they may collect personal information from the user(not sure why).
Another detail that grasped our attention was that as soon as we installed it on Mozilla Firefox, the browser immediately displayed a notification that it starts up slowly which redirects to a recommendation to remove add-ons that may cause slowdowns in performance. Even though it might be classified as non-malware, this program may pose a serious risk to PC, information wise.
Also, another thing that raised suspicions is the SMS service it provides. Those services required us registrations, and some of them even prompted us to install various widgets that should somehow help us with our messaging. These all point out to the fact that SMSFromBrowser does not have its messaging service. Even though the software is not illegal, we have established that it is not of much benefit to the browser and may cause slowdowns. More to it, you never know whether the ‘partners’ this website has are legitimate and whether they could be dangerous or not.
