More Information About the V3JS Ransomware Virus

The V3JS virus is a newly detected ransomware threat that has been detected in an ongoing attack against computer users. We suspect that Polish-speaking hackers are behind it, as the compromised victims will see a message written in both English and Polish. Alternatively, the Polish-speaking users might be targeted in a test campaign. We don’t know for sure which of these two statements is true at this moment.

A limited number of samples have been identified which indicates that not a lot of attacks have been successful so far. This also does not show which is the primary infection technique. We assume that the most popular methods will be utilized. This included the creation of virus carriers — these are files that will install the ransomware when launched. Common examples are documents of popular office formats: presentations, databases, spreadsheets, and text files. When opened they will request the running of the built-in scripts (macros). If this is done the virus will be installed automatically. The other method is the use of infected application installers — they are made by modifying the legitimate setup bundles of the well-known programs which are often downloaded by end-users.

All virus-related files can be distributed using common techniques. This includes the use of manipulative tactics — the criminals can attempt to fake well-known services and companies. This is done by inserting the virus code in such email messages or websites. They can have shared similarities by being hosted on similar-sounding domain names to the faked services, host stolen content, and use fabricated design. The email messages themselves maybe build on the basis of templates and are usually prepared in bulk. They can either attach the virus data or have it linked in the main contents. Such virus data can also be uploaded to online sites, file-sharing networks, forums, chat rooms, and etc.

As soon as the infection is run on a given computer, the built-in sequence will start. Most of the viruses of this category will start with some kind of a data gathering procedure — it is designed to hijack personal user’s data or system information. The stolen data can include a report of the available hardware components and certain values that are set by the operating system. This information can be collected and used by another module to generate a unique identifier — a very useful ID that can be used to calculate the number of impacted hosts.

Many ransomware threats also choose to conduct system changes — they can be the manipulation of the boot options, thereby leading to a so-called persistent infection. This means that the virus engine will start every time the computer is powered on, it may also block access to the recovery boot options. This will make recovery much more difficult. Additionally, sensitive files may be removed: backups, shadow volume copies, important application data, and etc. If the Windows Registry is modified in any way, the users can experience serious performance issues, data loss, unexpected errors, and the inability to launch certain services.

Other actions can also be prescribed by hackers in future attack campaigns. When everything has finished running the actual ransomware operations will begin. This is done by using a powerful cipher to process important user data. The exact file types that are to be encrypted will depend on a built-in list. Usually, this includes the most often accessed data: multimedia files, archives, backups, documents, and etc. All of them will receive the .V3JS extension. To manipulate the victims into paying the hackers a decryption fee the virus will create text files in folders where there are encrypted files. Furthermore, the criminals have also included the ability to create lockscreen instances — they are designed to block the victims from normally operating their machines.
