Eofyd virus – another strain of CrySis/Dharma ransomware has been detected in the wild. The malicious program will encrypt victims’ files and append the .eofyd file extension to their names. Then the ransomware will ask victims to pay a ransom in BitCoin or another cryptocurrency for a decryption tool.
The other two extensions will appear in the names of corrupted files. The first one is a victim’s ID number and the second is hackers related email address. If you have happened to become a victim of the Eofyd virus, you will probably notice a pop-up window that displays a ransom message as well as a text file that contains another ransom message. The text file is named FILES ENCRYPTED.txt and it can be found somewhere on the infected PC.

The encryption is conducted with the strong AES ( Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption algorithm. After the encryption, damaged files are renamed with the .eofyd file extension and the other two before it. For example, an image file 7.jpg will be renamed to 7.jpg.id-K279Y369.[filerecovery@zimbabwe.su].eofyd where the first extension is an ID number needed for the decryption process and the second is a hackers’ email address. Unfortunately, these files can no longer be opened.
To extort a ransom fee from its victims, Eofyd Dharma ransomware drops its ransom note files. One of them is a pop-up window with a message. And another is the text file FILES ENCRYPTED.txt.
