A toolbar, developed by Mindspark Interactive Network, called AutoPcBackup has emerged recently on the PUA scene (Potentially Unwanted Application). Such programs may be unsuitable for use and some of them may use cookies to gather user information and slow the PC down with interruptive advertisements.
AutoPcBackup Toolbar – How Does It Work?
AutoPcBackup toolbar can be added as an extension to Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer or Safari. Similar to other Mindspark toolbars, like EasyDocMerge, Biggamecountdown, FileSendSuite, the toolbar may collaborate with third parties and situate tracking cookies on user PCs with the purpose of possibly displaying ad content, using ‘behavioral targeting’ via cookies.
We decided to install the toolbar and we have discovered some interesting details. At first, we noticed that it requested several different permissions, similar to other browser add-ons. Some of them were the power to modify browsing history, manage apps, extensions and themes and downloads. Also there were requests to access the previously mentioned and to communicate with other native apps.
Also, when we examined the privacy policy of Mindspark, we noticed that they have regarded their own software as potentially unsafe in the security paragraph. More to it, they stated that in some particular case they may share user information with third parties, more specifically such may be the sale of assets, transactions, business projects, etc.
After the toolbar was installed on the browser, it changed the homepage with custom search engine(myway) that installed cookies on the computer and was powered by Google.
More to it, when we decided to use the backup and some other functions connected with backup on the toolbar, we encountered a message, prompting us to install an app that will help us backup our computer. This raised our eyebrows, because we began to wonder what the toolbar actually does and is it really necessary and whether or not It would be better to promote an app instead? This app was detected by our antivirus program as Win32:Mindspark-A.
