Chaos Malware – Update

Chaos is a newly developed malware that is expected to be massively released into the wild soon. Iterations of the threat had been probably released in a test campaign against a small group of people. Chaos malware is still under construction. It is noteworthy that the threat is advertised as ransomware but analysis shows it’s closer to the characteristics of a wiper.

Chaos Ransomware – Distribution and Impact

The so-called Chaos ransomware is a newly discovered cryptovirus, strain of the infamous RYUK ransomware. Similar to other Ryuk variants this threat can be released in campaigns that aim to deliver it on target devices with the help of shady mechanisms. Malspam, malvertising, freeware installers, fake software update notifications, and corrupted web pages may be utilized. The most preferred spread method is believed to be malspam as it could spread the threat on a large scale. Massive email spam campaigns are likely to be targeting computer users worldwide.

The greedy and heartless criminals behind Ryuk Ransomware have been reported to launch campaigns against hospitals even when such organizations are extremely busy since the Coronavirus pandemic emerged. The virus has even received an important update in March. It was equipped with a new work-like capability that allows the ransomware to spread across compromised networks.

What happens when the Chaos ransomware runs on a computer system is a complex attack of a few stages. By executing a long sequence of malicious processes, the ransomware evades detection, misuses main system functionalities, and eventually encodes valuable personal files.

As a part of the RYUK ransomware family, the Chaos virus encrypts target files by utilizing a biult-in cipher module that is programmed to transform target files with a sophisticated algorithm. The Chaos Ryuk virus is likely to target the most common user data:

  • Documents;
  • Databases;
  • Multimedia Files;
  • Archives;
  • Backups;
  • Restore Points & System Data.

Due to changes applied to files’ original code, encoded files remain inaccessible until their code is reverted back to its original state. This version of the ransomware appends a different extension on each encrypted file. It adds a string of a few random characters to the names of all encrypted files.

Cybercriminals who stand behind Chaos ransomware attacks aim to blackmail victims into paying a ransom fee for a decryption tool. Their demands are presented by a ransom note (read_it.txt) which states the following:

—-> Chaos is multi language ransomware. Translate your note to any language <---- All of your files have been encrypted Your computer was infected with a ransomware virus. Your files have been encrypted and you won't be able to decrypt them without our help.What can I do to get my files back?You can buy our special decryption software, this software will allow you to recover all of your data and remove the ransomware from your computer.The price for the software is $1,500. Payment can be made in Bitcoin only. How do I pay, where do I get Bitcoin? Purchasing Bitcoin varies from country to country, you are best advised to do a quick google search yourself to find out how to buy Bitcoin. Many of our customers have reported these sites to be fast and reliable: Coinmama - hxxps://www.coinmama.com Bitpanda - hxxps://www.bitpanda.com Payment informationAmount: 0.1473766 BTC Bitcoin Address: bc1qw0ll8p9m8uezhqhyd7z459ajrk722yn8c5j4fg

Files encrypted by Chaos ransomware are impossible to decrypt without the right decryption software. That tool costs $1,500 (or 0.1473766 BTC). Money transfers are accepted in Bitcoin only. If you pay the ransom and then start waiting for the decryption software that will encrypt your files, you can wait forever. There is never a guarantee that hackers will act as promised. That’s why we recommend that you refrain from transferring money to cybercriminals’ wallets.

For the sake of your security, it is advisable to uninstall Chaos ransomware from the operating system and consider the help of alternative data recovery methods.
