mpaj Ransomware – In Detail

mpaj Files Virus might deliver its infection with different methods. Cryptoviruses like this one could spread among torrent platforms or file sharing sites. Free applications and tools found on the Web can be disguised as helpful but hide the malicious script for STOP ransomware.

Being the new version of STOP ransomware, know that this is a very dangerous ransomware virus. The mpaj virus is an infection that affects system files to infect a computer and try to stick to it even after a reinstallation of the operating system.

.mpaj files virus will encrypt your files and then show a message with instructions in a file placed inside folders containing corrupted files. The makers of the cryptovirus want you to pay a ransom fee for the restoration of your files. STOP ransomware cannot be decrypted if the data is locked with an ONLINE key, meaning the key is stored outside your computer machine. So the files will stay locked in that case, unless malware researchers find a way to unlock them and add the method in a decrypter program. mpaj files ransomware could change Windows processes.

When encryption is done the .mpaj Files virus will place a ransom note along files across your computer machine. You can see the contents in the _readme.txt file.

The ransom note inside the text file, states the following:

You shouldn’t pay the ransom fee under any circumstances. Understand that your .mpaj files may not get recovered, and nobody could guarantee their restoration or that the decryptor program will work.

Cybercriminals have designed this ransomware to encrypt files and add the .mpaj extension to them. All file types such as documents, archives, backups, picture, video and audio files among others can be encrypted by the mpaj virus variant, so storing backups in another location which is not connected to the infected machine by Internet is a good solution.

The ransomware could be set to erase all the Shadow Volume Copies from the Windows operating system with the help of the following command:

→vssadmin.exe delete shadows /all /Quiet

If your computer is infected with the ransomware and your files are locked, read the instructions after this paragraph to find out how you could potentially restore your files back to normal. Note that if your files are locked with the ONLINE key, as most newer variants of the virus, there is no known way to decrypt your files. That should not discourage you to try, as most variants of the ransomware can be decrypted.

Dragging the program or its folder to the recycle bin can be a very bad decision. The proper way to get a program off your computer is to Uninstall it. To do that:

1. Hold the Windows Logo Button and "R" on your keyboard. A Pop-up window will appear.

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

You can access them by opening the Windows registry editor and deleting any values, created by Mpaj virus there. This can happen by following the steps underneath:

1. Open the Run Window again, type "regedit" and click OK.

2. When you open it, you can freely navigate to the Run and RunOnce keys, whose locations are shown above.

3. You can remove the value of the virus by right-clicking on it and removing it.
Tip: To find a virus-created value, you can right-click on it and click "Modify" to see which file it is set to run. If this is the virus file location, remove the value.

IMPORTANT!
Before starting "Step 4", please boot back into Normal mode, in case you are currently in Safe Mode.
This will enable you to install and use SpyHunter 5 successfully.

Step 4: Scan for Mpaj virus with SpyHunter Anti-Malware Tool

1. Click on the "Download" button to proceed to SpyHunter's download page.

It is recommended to run a scan before purchasing the full version of the software to make sure that the current version of the malware can be detected by SpyHunter. Click on the corresponding links to check SpyHunter's EULA, Privacy Policy and Threat Assessment Criteria.
