Trins Virus Ransomware [.trins Files] Remove & Restore Data [Free]

What Is Trins Virus?

Trins-Virus

Trins virus is the name of a ransomware infection, whose main goal is to get in your computer and begin encrypting your files in order to make them unable to be opened. The main outcome of this activity is to get you to pay a ransom in the form of BitCoin to the criminals behind it. To get the victim to pay, the Trins virus leaves behind a ransom note file, called RECOVERY.txt, whose main goal is to have instructions how to buy and pay BitCoin anonymously.

Read this article to learn more on how to remove the Trins virus and try to restore your encrypted files without having to pay the ransom.

Trins Virus – How Did I Get Infected?

Trins virus is the kind of virus, that is the cryptovirus type, just like .selena, .ckae, .cope and others, this virus may also end up on your computer as a result of several kinds of methods, the main of which are known to be the following:

  • By being downloaded from a shady site.
  • If it is sent to you as an e-mail attachment or a URL.

Trins virus may get sent to you via e-mail, where the infection file could pretend to be an e-mail attachment, like the following:

  • Receipts.
  • Work-related files.
  • Invoices.
  • E-Tickets for events or flights.

If this is the case, then the files can contain malicious macros in them and once opened, these fake documents may appear to trigger an infection process, like the following:

Another way is to get infected by downloading a malicious file, which pretends to be an executable, posted online on some software download site, for example:

  • Cracked portable versions of apps.
  • Software or game cracks.
  • Software patches.
  • Self extracting archives or regular archives.
  • Fake installation files.
  • Key generator (or Keygen).

Trins Virus – What Does It Do?

Once Trins virus has caused an infection on your PC, it most likely connects to a remote host, where it could download the malicious files and situate them in the following directories:

  • %LocalLow%
  • %AppData%
  • %Windows%
  • %SystemDrive%
  • %Local%
  • %Temp%
  • %System%
  • %system32%

Trins virus may also leave its ransom note file, containing the extortion instructions. It is called RECOVERY.txt, which has the following text:

All your important files are encrypted!
Any attempts to recover your files using
third-party software will have fatal consequences, the files will be changed forever,
without the possibility of recovery.
There is only one way to get your files back: install the tor browser (hxxps://www.torproject.org/download )
Important: Create a new email in the service hxxp://pflujznptk5lmuf6xwadfqy6nffykdvahfbljh7liljailjbxrgvhfid.onion/account/create for contact!
write to me at Retailgaze@onionmail.org
Send me your ID by email

Trins virus may also perform modifications of the Windows Registries and it may attack mainly the Run and RunOnce ones:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

What Are .trins Files

The .trins files are encrypted, using an encryption algorithm. The virus may scan for the following files to encode:

  • Archive file formats (.zip, .rar, etc).
  • Documents of different types (.docx, .pptx, etc.).
  • Audio (.mp3, .wav, etc.).
  • Picture file kinds (.jpg, .png, .etc).
  • Videos (.mp4, .avi, etc.).
  • Others.

After encryption is complete, the virus ads the .trins file extension. Changing it will not fix the files and is not recommended as it may damage them further. The files assume the following appearance:

Such a software will scan your computer and make sure that all of the malicious files of the virus are removed fully.

If you want to make sure and restore all of the files with .trins extension, then our main suggestion is to back them up fist and then wait for security researchers to release a decryptor. In the meantime, you can try to restore your files using a professional data recovery software, like the one on the “try to restore” step in the guide below. Such programs have the capability of scanning your computer and restoring as many encrypted files as possible to their previous working state, but be advised that they do not come with a 100% guarantee to work.

Step 2: Uninstall Trins and related malware from Windows

Here is a method in few easy steps that should be able to uninstall most programs. No matter if you are using Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista or XP, those steps will get the job done. Dragging the program or its folder to the recycle bin can be a very bad decision. If you do that, bits and pieces of the program are left behind, and that can lead to unstable work of your PC, errors with the file type associations and other unpleasant activities. The proper way to get a program off your computer is to Uninstall it. To do that:

1. Hold the Windows Logo Button and "R" on your keyboard. A Pop-up window will appear.
delete ransomware from windows step 1

2. In the field type in "appwiz.cpl" and press ENTER.
delete ransomware from windows step 2

3. This will open a window with all the programs installed on the PC. Select the program that you want to remove, and press "Uninstall"
delete ransomware from windows step 3Follow the instructions above and you will successfully delete most unwanted and malicious programs.

Step 3: Clean any registries, created by Trins on your computer.

The usually targeted registries of Windows machines are the following:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

You can access them by opening the Windows registry editor and deleting any values, created by Trins there. This can happen by following the steps underneath:

1. Open the Run Window again, type "regedit" and click OK.

Step 5: Try to Restore Files Encrypted by Trins.

Method 1: Use STOP Decrypter by Emsisoft.

Not all variants of this ransomware can be decrypted for free, but we have added the decryptor used by researchers that is often updated with the variants which become eventually decrypted. You can try and decrypt your files using the instructions below, but if they do not work, then unfortunately your variant of the ransomware virus is not decryptable.

Follow the instructions below to use the Emsisoft decrypter and decrypt your files for free. You can download the Emsisoft decryption tool linked here and then follow the steps provided below:

1 Right-click on the decrypter and click on Run as Administrator as shown below:

stop ransomware decryptor step 1

2. Agree with the license terms:

stop ransomware decryptor step 2

3. Click on "Add Folder" and then add the folders where you want files decrypted as shown underneath:

stop ransomware decryptor step 3

4. Click on "Decrypt" and wait for your files to be decoded.

stop ransomware decryptor step 4

Note: Credit for the decryptor goes to Emsisoft researchers who have made the breakthrough with this virus.

Method 2: Use data recovery software

Ransomware infections and Trins aim to encrypt your files using an encryption algorithm which may be very difficult to decrypt. This is why we have suggested a data recovery method that may help you go around direct decryption and try to restore your files. Bear in mind that this method may not be 100% effective but may also help you a little or a lot in different situations.

1. Download the recommended Data Recovery software by clicking on the link underneath:

Simply click on the link and on the website menus on the top, choose Data Recovery - Data Recovery Wizard for Windows or Mac (depending on your OS), and then download and run the tool.
