More Information About the Viper Ransomware Virus

A new and very dangerous computer virus has been discovered by security experts, it is called the Viper ransomware. So far only a very small number of samples have been collected. This shows that it is possible for the threat, at this stage, to be a test release or run to a limited number of targets. At this time the identity of the hackers is also not known. The small number of virus samples available so far does not show any code snippets from other popular malware variants. It is possible that the hacking group has created it from scratch or they have ordered it from the hacker underground marketplaces.

Such viruses can be spread to the intended victims by different tactics, including the creation of infected virus carriers, popular options are application installers of widely used programs that are frequently downloaded and run by the computer users. The malware infections will happen automatically in the background as soon as these files are run. A similar technique is used to create macro-embedded documents of popular office formats. When opened by the users a prompt will be shown asking for the scripts to be run. This will start the virus infection.

All of these files can be uploaded to various hacker-controlled sites or delivered in email messages, all of them utilizing phishing tactics. This is used to manipulate the victims into believing that they are accessing safe and legitimate resources. The sites and messages can be hosted on similar-sounding domain names to well-known services and companies, as well as advertised on hacker-controlled advertising networks. The files can be uploaded to them as resources for download or deployed automatically when the content is loaded by the web browser. Data including the .Viper virus can be uploaded to file-sharing networks like BitTorrent where both legitimate and pirate content is shared among users.

When malware is installed on a given computer its built-in commands will be started. They can change according to the hacker instructions, the infected computer’s distinct characteristics, and other variables. At the start of the infection, many of the viruses of this category will engage in information gathering: it will hijack personal user’s information, system information, and certain operating system parameters. Another engine can use the information to create an identifier for each affected computer. Personal users’ information may be used for crimes like identity theft or financial abuse.

.Viper virus strains are particularly dangerous as they can be programmed to carry out extensive system changes of different types. In most cases this includes the setting of the malware as a persistent threat, it will be started automatically every time the computer is powered on. It may also block access to the recovery options, thus making it very difficult to follow most manual recovery guides and without the use of a quality anti-malware tool.

Furthermore, follow-up modifications may include the Windows Registry — the creation of new values for the virus or the modification of existing ones. This can lead to consequences such as data loss, performance issues, and the inability to start certain services or operations.

Only when every module has completed running the file encryption phase will be started. Using a built-in list of target file type extensions: archives, backups, documents, and multimedia files. The strong cipher will make them inaccessible and renamed with the .Viper extension. The victim users will then be extorted to pay a decryption fee by the generated text files or lockscreen instances.
