If you happen to be a victim of malware that came as a result of visiting or using the services of KickassTorrents network, an issue that is also referred as KickassTorrents virus you can find a secure way to remove present malicious files.

KickassTorrents (KAT) – Free Torrents at What Cost?

One of the most popular directories for torrent files is KickassTorrents – also abbreviated as KAT. It was formed back in 2008 and by the end of 2014, KAT became the most visited BitTorrent directory in the world. However, the official domain kickasstorrents.com was seized by the U.S. government.

However, its staff members didn’t give up so easily and decided to keep the directory alive. So they moved it to several other domains including еka.tt, kickass.to, kickass.so, kickasstorrents.im, kickass.so and kat.cr. All of these domains were also seized by the United States Department of Justice. Some of the domains were even blocked and flagged as “potentially malicious” by popular web browsers because of security concerns with some of the ads pointing to malware.

Currently, Kickasstorrents‘ primary domain is kickasstorrents.to. It is a website where popular movies, TV series, apps, documents, music, adult content, and other torrents could be downloaded for free. The website is operating via the so-called peer-to-peer model. This model is designed to transfer files through the BitTorrent protocol.

BitTorrent is an alternative way of downloading big files without waiting for too long due to slow Internet connection, distant server location or many other online users who are trying to download the file at the same time. For this download method users need to have an installed BitTorrent client like qBittorrent, Vuze, and uTorrent.

BitTorrent Protocol Abuse – One Way to Get a KickassTorrents Virus

Abuse #1 BitTorrent clients are designed to establish a connection to the server in order to receive announce requests and report on how much they have uploaded, downloaded and how much is remaining to download. This announce request technology is created to enforce the share ratio. Unfortunately, a software weakness listed under the name Client-Side Enforcement of Server-Side Security can enable attackers to bypass the protection mechanisms of this data transfer. This might result in potentially unexpected interactions between the client and the server. As a consequence, malformed or unexpected input can pass into the application as trusted data.

Abuse #2 Man in the Middle attacks endanger the BitTorrent protocol as well. The connection between your BitTorrent client which allows you to download torrents from KickassTorrents and the website’s server is considered to be secure when the entities at each end of the communication channel are adequately verified. Inadequate or inconsistent verification may result in insufficient or incorrect identification. This can have negative consequences as an attacker could hijack the connection and pose as one of the original entities. As a result, he can read and possibly modify the communication. In other words, the attacker could deliver malicious code on the computer by masquerading it as a requested Kickass torrent file.

Fake KickassTorrents Sites

Being one of the most popular directories for torrent files KickassTorrents has many fake copies that misuse its fame. All these fake websites aim to make users believe that they have accessed the real site. They may be hosted on similar domains. Their homepage design may be the same design as the design of the official website.

By creating copies of KickassTorrents hackers aim to trick online users into entering their account credentials, registering and providing payment card details or downloading torrents infected with malware.

Remove KickassTorrents Virus from Your Machine

So yes, downloading torrents from KAT can cost you an active virus on the machine. If you want to remove KickassTorrents virus you should know where it’s files and objects are hidden. For the complete detection and removal of viruses that came as a result of using KickassTorrents or a fake copy of the website, we strongly suggest that you download and run a free scan with an advanced anti-malware software. Such a tool will automatically identify and eliminate all of the malicious files and objects, related to a KickassTorrents virus from your computer and protect it in the future too.
