.muhstik Virus virus remove

The .muhstik virus is a ransomware that is currently set against target end users on a global scale. There is no information available about the hacking group behind it. It is believed to be a new iteration of the famous ransomware family. This is one of the reasons why we believe that the hackers are experienced.

Once the .muhstik virus has started it will execute its built-in sequence of dangerous commands. Depending on local conditions or the specific hacker instructions various actions will take place. The file encryption will begin after them — the encrypting component will use a built-in list of target file type extensions. In the end the victim files will be renamed with the .muhstik extension.

.muhstik Virus – Spread and Impact

The .muhstik virus is a dangerous ransomware which is believed to be based on an earlier threat known as QNAPCrypt. The captured samples associated with it shos that once again it can be used against NAS storage device made by QNAP. The campaigns appear to target primarily English-speaking users and the route of infection is the delivery of the virus code on the storage device or to any of the connected computers that can access it. In most cases the QNAP NAS servers are located inside internal networks which means that any of the attacks that tha are directed to them must be able to bypass any security mechanisms — routers, firewalls and instrusion detection systems. This means that it is far more likely that the .muhstik virus comes from a contaminated computer.

The hackers can use various tactics including orchestrating phishing campaigns that use social engineering and manipulation of the intended targets into thinking that they have received a legitimate email message or have visited a legitimate landing page. Through interaction with this type of content the ransomware will be installed.

The victims can also be tricked by creating special payload carriers — documents, app installers and malware plugins for software and browsers. They can additionally be found within file-sharing networks like BitTorrent where both legitimate and pirate data can be found.

What’s known about this attack is that after the infection has started the file encryption process will be started. However depending on the settings of the attack campaign other actions can also take place. An example is when the virus sample is configured to harvest data, it can be any of the following categories:

  • Personal User Information — This can include any data that can directly reveal the identity of the victims. This includes information that can expose a person’s name, address, phone numbers and any stored account credentials.
  • Machine Identification — The victims can create unique IDs that can be associated with each compromised host. This is done by creating a complete profile of the installed hardware parts and processing them through a special algorithms that outputs a special string.
  • Personal Files — During the infection the hackers can also hijack any data found on the computers and/or NAS storage devices.

After the target user data have been encrypted by using the algorithm a ransomware note will be created in a file called README_FOR_DECRYPT.txt. Note that all commonly used data will be affected including archives, backups, documents, databases, multimedia files and etc.

.muhstik Virus – What Does It Do?

Hello, thank you for your clear explanation how to remove muhstik virus on a pc, but yesterday I was affected by this virus on my Qnap Nas (model TS-253A). I use it mostly to storage my music archive (to stream a web radio called Funky Corner Radio) and photos. When I noticed something strange was happening I rebooted my nas: about half of my music library were affected by the muhstik virus and all of my photos. The other two pcs, linked to the network at that moment, seem not to be affected. Now, the question is: how can I remove the muhstik virus from my nas? I also have a usb backup of it which seems not affected. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hey there, I am sorry to hear what has happened. Unfortunately it appears that the virus has been able to infiltrate your NAS device. From what I can tell the ransomware script has been launched and your files have been affected.

The first thing that I would recommend doing is to scan the device from your computer via the anti-spyware tool — this will check if the actual virus files are still there and remove them. This is important as it will other other devices from the network from data encryption. A data recovery tool or a backup can also be used to recover partially or fully your files.

Be sure to change all passwords, enable firewalls and update your anti-virus software in order to protect yourself from further attacks. Keep us updated!
