Hupigon Trojan — Overview
The Hupigon Trojan is a well-known computer malware designed to infect computers and networks. It has been used by hacking groups for several years and received updates and changes in it infection sequence. According to our research the first versions of the threat has been detected in 2008 in a dangerous attack campaign. Then it used the familiar tactic of using a packed executable file, when executed by the intended victims it ran a series of commands that installed a local Trojan client that connected to a remote server and allowing the hackers to take over control of the machines. Over the years the Hupigon Trojan has been sighted in numerous variants written primarily in the Delphi programming language which is supported by all modern operating systems. The newer releases can feature new modules and ways of distribution. Common infection strategies can be the following:
- Phishing Strategies –The threats can be used attached and inserted in phishing campaigns that utilize Email messages and special sites and landing pages that impersonate notifications and messages prepare by companies and services. They are hosted on domain names that sound similar to them and may contain such design and content.
- File Carriers — The Hupigon Trojan infection can be caused by the insertion of the relevant infection code in various types of files that are sent to the intended victims. They can be macro-infected documents and application installers of popular software. They are created by the criminals by taking the original files and inserting the virus code.
- Existing Virus Infections — Already present malware, exploits or coordinated mass virus samples can lead to the Hupigon Trojan infection.
In April 2020 samples of the Hupigon Trojan were found in spearphishing email messages that used adult dating sites as lure for the intended victims. The hacking group behind it were targeting inboxes of US universities and colleges.
The analyzed samples of the Hupigon Trojan which have been gathered over the years contain different malicious actions which will be run on the contaminated systems. They will vary depending on the the individual hacker instructions and the local machine conditions. Most of the Trojans will include a persistent installation script which is designed to ensure that the relevant code will be started when the computer is booted. It may also block access to the recovery options and certain system services. Most Trojans will also include a files modification service which can act against both system and user files, as well as the Windows Registry. This can lead to issues such as the following:
- Performance Issues — The computer can slow-down considerably to the point of being unusable.
- Application Instability — Changes to the application engine can render certain options and features non-working.
Many of the Hupigon Trojan samples may also be configured to harvest sensitive information which can be personal information or machine data. A report can be automatically generated by the Trojan engine using all of this data.
Finally the Trojan engine will connect the local client to a hacker-controlled server thus allowing the criminals to take over control of the victim machines. This will allow them not only to spy on the users, but to harvest data and later on use the collected data to carry out further crimes like financial abuse and identity theft.
