They are often made by taking the legitimate files from their official sources and modifying them with the necessary virus code. Other data can also be affected. All kinds of other data may be used as well — this includes malicious plugins for web browsers and etc. In other cases the hackers can use a direct attacks that will look for system vulnerabilities and weaknesses. If any are found then the Nodersok Trojan will be installed.
This particular threat is known for being spread using a multitude of weaknesses. It is set against both end users and servers. Nodersok Trojan — How Did I Get It
The Nodersok Trojan is an advanced type of malware that is devised by an unknown hacking group and is being sent to its intended targets in a large-scale campaign in September 2019. One of the distinct features about it is that it is designed to target the following groups of networks: private and government organizations, education and healthcare institutions, professional services and the financial and retail sector. There is no information yet about the main method used by the hackers behind it but we anticipate that is one of the following:
- Direct Attacks — The hackers can use automated toolkits in order to search for weaknesses in the systems. If such are found the engines will automatically penetrate the defenses so that the malware will be insalled on the computers.
- Payload Delivery — The hackers can embed virus installation scripts in various files including documents and application installers. They can take the form of popular software or important files, but when they are launched the built-in macros will be launched which will lead to the virus deployment.
- Previous Attack — The Nodersok Trojan can be planted onto the target devices by other viruses which have already impacted the systems.
- Social Engineering Campaigns — The hackers can use phishing tactics and manipulation in order to coerce the recipients into clicking on the shown links and executable files.
Nodersok Trojan — Capabilities
As soon as the Nodersok Trojan is installed on a given computer it will start to execute its built-in behavior pattern. One of the distinct features associated with this particular threat is that it delivers and uses two legitimate tools — a Windows-based Node.js framework implementation and a network packet capture library called WinDivert. This gives security researchers reasons to believe that the hacking collective behind the threat is experienced enough to integrate the necessary modules that use them.
One of the most common consequences is the designation of the hosts as a zombie proxy — hosts that are used to relay hacker instructions and malware. The network connections are done via the service providers of the hacked computers which anonymizes the fact that they originate from someone else. This is used in cases such as distributed denial of service attacks which are used mainly for sabotage purposes.
The security analysis shows that many of the samples will download an HTML application with a random name which probably means that many of the infections originate from browsing malware online ads. A content analysis shows that they are likely hosted on the legitimate cloud hosting network Cloudfront which suggests that the hackers are utilizing it to host and generate hundreds of sites.
To launch the built-in modules the virus will use the PowerShell execution. It is used not only to call the additional scripts, but also to disable the Windows Defender service, as well as Windows Update feature.
This means that potentially the Nodersok Trojan can also be used to launch components such as information gathering — it can hijack user information that can be used for crimes such as financial abuse and identity theft. If any machine data is hijacked it will be used to create a complete profile of the host computer. This will lead to the creation of an unique ID that is going to be associated with every contaminated device.
