Where’s Windows 10 Headed?
What comes after Windows 10? Microsoft’s CEO Satya Madella recently teased about “the next generation of Windows” in a statement:
Soon we will share one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunity for developers and creators. I’ve been self-hosting it over the past several months, and I’m incredibly excited about the next generation of Windows. Our promise to you is this: we will create more opportunity for every Windows developer today and welcome every creator who is looking for the most innovative, new, open platform to build and distribute and monetize applications. We look forward to sharing more very soon.
As obvious by the statement, the changes will improve app monetization. But what will be there for Windows users?
It is also known that the company has been working on a new app store for Windows, as well as on some other user-interface changes. The changes involving the so-called “economic opportunity for developers” will allow developers to submit any Windows application, including browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, TheVerge recently commented. There are also rumors suggesting that Microsoft could allow third-party commerce platforms in apps. This way, developers could avoid Microsoft’s 15% cut on applications and 12% cut on games.
Another notable thing about Nadella’s teaser is that there is no mention of “Windows 10,” rather than a “next generation” of the operating system. This could mean a more substantial development of Windows.
Last week, the company confirmed that its operating system built for dual-screen devices, called Windows 10X, will no longer be available. Instead, Microsoft is implementing the best features of Windows 10X into the main version of Windows 10.
Nadella also promised that more information about the future of Windows is coming very soon. Maybe there’s a new announcement pending in the upcoming weeks? We will keep you posted.
