Salam! Ransomware – How Did I Get It?
Salam! ransomware can get in your computer in a few ways. Spam emails containing an attachment with a malicious file is a common distribution way. Opening the attachment will automatically insert malware inside your computer. The body of the email may also contain malicious code. So, opening the attachment or not, can still get your PC infected.
Other ways for this ransomware to get in your machine are by social networks and file sharing services. They may contain malicious attachments or files connected with the Salam! ransomware. You may see such files presented as helpful or needed. Untrusted websites and suspicious links can get you to malware infection as well, and this ransomware is no exclusion.
Salam! Ransomware – What Does It Do?
The Salam! malware is classified as ransomware. If your computer gets infected with it, a file is created which might make new entries inside the Windows Registry. The following Windows Registry entries are the most common modifications ransomware makes:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/Winlogon/Shell
and
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/
The purpose for those is to make the ransomware load automatically with each start of the Windows operating system.
A file is created to help the ransomware further:
%APPDATA%\tribologists.dll
Next, the ransomware creates a new file with the name WHATHAPPENEDTOYOURFILES.txt which has the ransom message inside. You can see the instructions in the picture:
You are given a custom ID, and the instructions read:

Hi. Your files are now encrypted. I have the key to decrypt them back.
I will give you a decrypter if you pay me. If you pay me today, the price is only 1 bitcoin.
If you pay me tomorrow, you will have to pay 2 bitcoins. If you pay me one week later the price
will be 7 bitcoins and so on. So, hurry up.Contact me using this email address: mahammad@opensourcemail.org
The ransomware creators ask 1 Bitcoin for payment in the first 24 hours. The price increases with 1 Bitcoin for every day that passes, after the initial deadline. The price for 1 Bitcoin at the moment is 422 US dollars.
Writing to the ransomware makers and intending to pay the ransom money is NOT recommended. Nothing and no one can guarantee that you will have your files restored. Paying the ransom would only make sure that cyber criminals get paid and support their criminal acts. That may encourage them to make a tougher variant of the ransomware.
The Salam! ransomware encrypts files it finds on disk drives. The list of extensions is still unknown, but mainly pictures and documents are locked.
Also unknown is whether Shadow Volume Copies are deleted from Windows. When you complete the removal process of this ransomware, you should check the fourth part of the instructions below. That section contains a few ways you could try to restore your files. You should also read the tips written in our forum about preventing ransomware.

1 Right-click on the decrypter and click on Run as Administrator as shown below:
2. Agree with the license terms:
3. Click on "Add Folder" and then add the folders where you want files decrypted as shown underneath:
4. Click on "Decrypt" and wait for your files to be decoded.
Note: Credit for the decryptor goes to Emsisoft researchers who have made the breakthrough with this virus.
Method 2: Use data recovery software
Ransomware infections and Salam! Ransomware aim to encrypt your files using an encryption algorithm which may be very difficult to decrypt. This is why we have suggested a data recovery method that may help you go around direct decryption and try to restore your files. Bear in mind that this method may not be 100% effective but may also help you a little or a lot in different situations.
Simply click on the link and on the website menus on the top, choose Data Recovery - Data Recovery Wizard for Windows or Mac (depending on your OS), and then download and run the tool.
